As a child in Honduras, I spend most of my childhood sick, missing school and worried.

It was not until I was an adult getting my Masters in Oriental Medicine, that I made and assimilated the connection of my father’s mental illness and the instability it created at home affecting everyone and my health. My mom buried herself in her work to survive emotionally and her absence was hard for me at times. All of this with the fear of their divorce, affected my body especially my lungs- my immune system and digestive system. I recall being a sickly child, susceptible to allergies, colds, bronchitis, you name it, I would get it. In addition, I had no interest in food and my appetite was very low. I had lost interest in many things.

In Chinese Medicine, we take into account how our emotional trauma affects our bodies and our organs. In my case, the sadness and grief of losing what was my home at that time is related and affected my lungs. The sadness, grief and crying are direct emotions and symptoms of the lung and when out of balance they can begin to affect that organs functions. Over time this was manifesting and translating into a vulnerable immunity system. The constant worry and the fear were debilitating & were affecting my digestion and immunity. Finally, at the age of seven, I told my mom to leave my dad. I’m grateful I spoke my truth and this gave my mother the confirmation and strength she needed to proceed. She was brave and she left him and eventually we left our country. It was a big loss and sacrifice for a better life and future.

Once we got re-established, guess what? My appetite and my immune system recovered. During those times, I was my mom’s rock and she was mine. I saw her suffer much stress and trauma, I was her little cheerleader, guiding her to take care of herself, walk, exercise and eat healthy. I now realize that its not a coincidence, I naturally had it in me.

Today as I woman and mom, I continue to love to empower women with their health and wellness so they may take care of what matters most to them.
